Fever in children
In children, any temperature of 38°C or above is considered high. A high temperature is common in young children but usually returns to normal in 3 or 4 days.
While high temperatures are usually caused by minor illnesses, they can be a sign of serious infections. This is why it is important to check whether your child is alert and responding to you, i.e. is your child content and smiling, staying awake, taking drinks and responding normally to people.
How to tell if your child has a fever
If your child has a high temperature they might:
- feel hotter than usual to touch - on their forehead, back or tummy
- feel sweaty or clammy
- have red cheeks
If you suspect your child has a fever, you should check their temperature with a thermometer.
Treatment for a child with a fever
- Dress your child normally. (Children with high temperatures should not be either underdressed or overwrapped)
- Do not use a cool cloth or sponge to get their temperature down
- Give your child plenty of fluids
- Give them food if they want it
- Check on your child regularly during the night
It is important to note that your child can still be sick even without a high temperature. If you are worried that your child may be seriously ill, seek medical help immediately, even if there is no high temperature.
